Lord of the Rings Case Study

A bit about the film:

The Two Towers is the second film out of The Lord of the Rings trilogy directed by Peter Jackson and based on the second volume of J.R.R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

The film follows the story of Frodo and Sam's quest to Mordo in order to destroy 'The One Ring of power'. Aragon, Legolas and Gimli come across a possed king Théoden and aid in the battle of Helm's Deep. Aswell as Merry and Pippin's escape from the Uruk-Hai and their encounter with the tree ent Treebeard.

The Two Towers was released in the cinema on the 18th December 2002 in the UK (release dates of other countries http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167261/releaseinfo) and remained showing untill August 24th 2003, being released for 250 days/35.7 weeks and raked in a total worldwide gross of $925,282,504 (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=twotowers.htm), thus meaning it had out-grossed its predecessor, The Fellowship of the Ring, and ranked it as the 8th highest-grossing films of all time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_Towers_(film). The DvD was released on the 26th August, with the extended version being released on 19th November 2003, and finally being release as the extended trilogy, 10th December 2004, and the theatrical edition on 30th August 2005.

Weta Digital were used for the digital effects in The Two Tower. Having the task of creating two digital characters who required social interaction with other characters unlike the Balrog and Cave troll in The Fellowship of the Ring. Aswell as the Battle of Helm's Deep.

The Two Towers has spawned itself a mega market of merchandise, ranging from computer games, cd soundtracks, bordgames, bedroom posters, clocks,chessbords, figurines,stationary, bedcovers, dvds of the films and the extended versions, there has even been a popular tabletop game (warhammer) version of lord of the rings, snowglobes, character statues, the list goes on and on.
